Rev. H. Fulton 1801/1896.: ' Keith V. Smith writes: ’Mosquito and Bulldog to Rev. Henry Fulton 1805-6 (1896): ‘Obtained by the Rev. H. Fulton in 1801 AD from Aboriginals in Norfolk Island.' Published in the Australian Anthropological Journal, 12 September 1896, p.13. ... ’Fulton’s Aboriginal informants were Bulldog and Mosquite who were sent to Norfolk Island on the Buffalo, which left Sydney in Ausgust 1805 (Sydney Gazette, 25 August 1805). Fulton was listed among officials on N.I. in 1805. ’Bulldog and Mosquito were from the Hawkesbury area. ‘Phillip’, the brother of Gnunga Gnunga Murremurgan (’Collins’), told Governor Bourke he was also the brother of Mosquito (K. Smith 2003 Sydney Indigenous Archive). ’This is therefore a vocabulary of the inland (Darug) dialect.’ ’Henry Fulton was a member of Governor Lachlan Macquarie's committee for the Native Institution at Parramatta. Lois Carrington (1983/1992) found a Fulton MS presumably of this word list, which she dated to 1800. However, Fulton arrived Norfolk Island in 1801 (see ADB 1:421 ). The sequence appear to have been: • the notebook was used for reording Aboriginal words, with pages headed with letters of the alphabet, and words added below them; • then the notebook was used to record BDM, and the irrelevant Aboriginal words entries were crossed out with loops. Each baptism family event was numbered, with dates beginning on the B page around late 1801. • Fulton seems to have done multiple baptisms, concluding each session with ’All baptised by me Henry Fulton’ or similar. Entries begin with date of baptism session. The first new event date on B page is 27 Dec. 1801. • Baptisms recorded exclusively to N at least. P page unused. T, U, W pages have marriages, no baptisms. • N page has a leading ’at Sydney Port Jackson’ then the next exent date: 16 Nov. 1806. It seems Fulton took the register with him to Sydney. ADB says he . Fulton may have used his own notebook taken from Sydney, where he may have collected the Sydney words. By the way, I resist the term 'palimpsest' which has been applied to it. Yes, it does come under one of the Merriam-Webster senses of "writing material (as a parchment or tablet) used one or more times after earlier writing has been erased" -- but the erasure in the Fulton MS is by crossing-out, and there is no over-writing of the vocabulary (or of any other entries except by insertion or correction), and there are a number of blank or partly blank pages.
