Mathews, R.H., Notebooks. These are held in the National Library of Australia. ---------- The cover features a label: ’Evringham’s CRITERION HOTEL’ The notebook contains many Gundungurra stories, as well as much Dharawal. -------------- Martin Thomas appears to have a complete photocopy set, and made available three to JMS in September 2004. JMS photocopied these. Notebooks written in his own hand. These are characterised by segments running to several pages, down to fragments of a line or two, for different languages. Mathews has often written the name of the language above or alongside, and often has attributed the entries to an informant. Mathews appears to have spent time reconsidering the notebook entries, and has included cross-references to related matter whether in the same notebook or in another one. The handwriting is for the most part unambiguous, but on on occasions difficult to interpret, and sometime the photocopy is faded. ----------------------------------- CONTENTS SUMMARY: Major sections o.ii Thurrawal [Pb1] 5-15 Kurnu 16-18 Barkindji 19-25 Thurrawal [Pb1] [SOUTH] 26-38 Wiradhuri 39-41 UNCERTAIN 42 Thangatti (Djan-gadi) 43-54 Thurrawal [Pb1] [?] [SOUTH] 54-58 Gundungurra [Pa1] [SOUTH] 58-61 Thurrawal [Pb1] [SOUTH] 62-63 Gundungurra [Pa1] [?] [SOUTH] 63 Thurrawal [Pb1] 64-65 UNKNOWN 65 Darkinyung 65 Thurrawal [Pb1] [SOUTH] 66 UNKNOWN/UNCERTAIN [Bundyalung ?] [66+] South Australia [?] 67 Thurrawal [Pb1] [SOUTH] 68 Dharug [O1 Dharuk] [OR IS THIS DARKINYUNG?] [ALLSYD] 69-72 Gundungurra [Pa1] [Burraagorang] [SOUTH] 72-77 Thurrawal [Pb1] [SOUTH] ------------------------ THIS IS ALSO PART OF THE CONTENT OF ’CRITERION’: Mathews, R.H., Notebook MS 8006/3/7 - Everingham’s CRITERION HOTEL cover Languages, Initiation Ceremonies, Organisation &c of the Aborigines Contents Baddyeri Language 3-4 Kurnu language 5-11 Miltyerra Initiation Ceremony 11-13 Kurnu language contd 14 Lower Darling Legend 16 Secret Language of the Wiradguri 28-29 Swift and Crow 31 Durdewa 43 & 48 ========= JS contents notes Victorian Tribes 12.1 Thurrawal Story"The Moon = Dyed«-dyung JS LIST LOCATION: MATHEWS A4 ‘CRITERION’ RINGBINDER
